“Every territory is the result of its history, of the events that have affected the community, but also of the choices made by politics. A path that must not be forgotten, indeed, but must be read to avoid making the mistakes of the past and to make the most of the experience gained”. This premise is necessary to underline the reflection that comes on the theme of the institution of the Province of Sibaritide by the former senator and former mayor of Corigliano Franco Pistoiamember among others, of the Committee for the Province of Sibaritide (how can we not remember in this circumstance the work of Giacinto Casciaro) who worked so hard in the years in which the territory began to claim its own territorial autonomy.
A need that has come back to the fore today after the merger between the two main centers, Rossano and Corigliano, which today represent the third largest municipal reality in Calabria in terms of population, but which despite this have witnessed and continue to witness more thefts and closures than recognition and investments.. But returning to the history of the committee for the Province of Sibaritide and the path undertaken, Pistoia calls for a reflection: «That history – considered interesting by Nicola Mancino, then Minister of the Interior – should not be lost. It has living pages, to be compared with needs and requests that arise from a new context. The proposal of the province of Sibari is an important chapter in the political debate of the late twentieth century. Developed by the mayors of the then municipalities of Corigliano, Rossano and also Cassano, it has recorded the consensus of a good part of the municipalities of Sibaritide, a consensus that is often hard-fought, but always passionate and nourished by sincere commitment. Trips, meetings (the most important one in the Insiti district), round tables, hosted by television networks.
