“Nutrition and tumors” is the title of the meeting-debate held in recent days at the Hotel Villa Fabiano in Rende, in the presence of over 70 people, whose speaker was Prof. Umberto Cornelli, professor of Toxicology at Loyola University of Chicago.
The meeting was presented by the president of the Rende Rotary Club, Flora Maria Ritacca, and moderated by Dr. Gennaro Meringolo, cardiologist, as well as assistant to the governor and past president of the Rende Rotary Club.
The prof. Cornelli updated those present on the results of very advanced research on the prevention of cancer through nutrition, describing the results of a recent study conducted in all Italian regions which considered the most used foods and the main types of cancer found.
Studies have shown that in recent years there has been an increase in breast, prostate and pancreatic cancers compared to other types of cancer.
The research has also made it possible to identify “causative” foods, which are considered crucial for the onset of tumors, and “protective” foods which, on the contrary, exert a defense action.
Interesting, among the various cases studied, are the results of research on wine which has been identified as a “causative element” of breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic tumors, or on yogurt identified as a “causative element” of breast tumors. breast and pancreas, or on farmed fish or on imported olive oil of dubious quality/origin of tumors of the bladder and respiratory system. Another interesting fact is the lower incidence of tumors in Italy in the southern regions compared to the northern ones.
At the end of the report the professor responded to the many questions received and clarified that “causative” foods do not depend on the foods themselves, but are in reality such due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides and intensive farming techniques which have repercussions important on the biological quality of foods.
