Messina like Salerno? Not really, anyway, not quite. Yes, there is always a De Luca involved – Vincenzo there, Cateno here – but the scenario, despite strong similarities, is not identical.
Let’s take a step back. A few days ago, a real political earthquake occurred in the Campania capital, with the presentation of the letter of resignation by the mayor Vincenzo Napoli. And here are the similarities: Naples was elected in 2022 – like Federico Basile – and, by resigning, forces Salerno voters to vote one year before the natural expiry of the mandate (set for 2027 for both Salerno and Messina). In his letter, Napoli speaks of “changed political conditions”. But the real reason is that the mayor of Salerno is giving way to his “lider maximo”, Vincenzo De Luca, who, no longer being able to be elected as president of the Campania Region, wants to return to being the mayor of his hometown (a job which, by the way, he knows how to do well, given that during the years of De Luca’s mayorship, Salerno has profoundly changed for the better, according to many). Here the difference between Salerno and Messina emerges. If Basile, in agreement with Cateno De Luca, decides to resign next Monday, he will do so to run again and not to make way for his “maximum leader”.
