From Saturday 4th to Monday 6th April the spectacle of foil sailing arrives in the unique setting of the Strait of Messina with the first stage of the Italia Cup WASZP, an event dedicated to the dynamic and spectacular foiling class. The initiative, promoted by the Italian Naval League Messina Section, will see the participation of athletes from all over Italy, ready to challenge themselves in one of the most fascinating and challenging technical and environmental contexts in the Mediterranean. The organization of the regatta is based on a strategic synergy between important institutions and operational realities of the territory: the Navy, the Coast Guard, the Pilots of the Strait and the Lega Navale Section of Messina itself. A fundamental collaboration to guarantee the safe conduct of the event in an area characterized by intense maritime traffic and complex weather and sea conditions. To allow sailors to cross the Strait without interfering with naval traffic, the Coast Guard will make use of the VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) system, ensuring the monitoring and coordinated management of movements at sea. The Navy will make its base available as a logistical hub for the regatta, guaranteeing safe access to the sea even in adverse or extreme weather conditions, to protect the athletes and staff. A decisive contribution will also be provided by the Strait Pilots, who will collaborate to ensure the regularity of the tests over long distances and will offer valuable information on the currents, a distinctive and often decisive element in the waters of the Strait.
To encourage maximum involvement of citizens and enthusiasts, four possible regatta courses have been identified, distributed in such a way as to offer wide visibility of the races along the coast (see maps). The event represents not only a sporting event of national importance, but also an opportunity to enhance the territory, capable of combining entertainment, innovation and institutional collaboration.
