At the center Stefano Argentino, the 27-year-old from Noto who on March 31st slaughtered Sara Campanella, Misilmeri’s 22-year-old university friend who had always rejected him, on the street in Messina. And who committed suicide last August in the bathroom of his cell, in Gazzi prison, by hanging himself with a sheet.
On March 3 at the Forensic Medicine of the Polyclinic the consultants of the prosecutor Giorgia Spiri, the prof. Daniela Sapienza and Dr. Nicola Pangallo, the expert operations will continue with the microscopic observation of the biological preparations. Probably also to understand which healing substances he had taken. And obviously there will be with them the consultants appointed by the lawyers of the seven suspects in the investigation among the top management of the penitentiary institution and the doctors who were treating him. On that same occasion, the defenders will be able to examine the medical documentation that was produced by the Gazzi prison facility.
However, there is already a fixed point in the investigation, and it is the autopsy performed by the professor. Wisdom. Argentino, therefore, died of asphyxiation, and when the prison police officers intervened there was nothing left to do for the 27-year-old from Noto. Argentino was immediately transferred to the prison infirmary, where doctors tried in vain to revive him.
The most important question to which the investigation will have to answer is whether the custodial control and treatment measures to which Sara’s killer was subjected were adequate, whether all the measures necessary to avoid suicide were respected, and understand the reasons why the strict surveillance regime initially imposed on the boy had been downgraded two weeks before the suicide.
Last August, the director of the penal institution Angela Sciavicco and her deputy Roberta Bulone, the head of the treatment area Letizia Vezzosi, and the pool of 4 experts – a psychiatrist and three psychologists -, the professionals Giuseppina Cammaroto, Irene Pagano Dritto, Contenta Magistro and Guglielmo Cotroneo, who were treating the young man, were reached by notices of guarantee – as a necessary action in this phase.
The 27-year-old’s planning of the femicide dates back several months before the fact. The knife used was never found by the police. From the web traces on his computer, investigators ascertained that the purchase took place on Amazon on 7 November 2024, the package was then found in the house in via Natoli, in Messina, where he lived while attending lessons. On October 14, 2024, at 3 am, Argentino wrote: “I could hang myself inside the wardrobe… where is the bar”, “Door handle?”.
