The results achieved are the result of constant relaunch, expansion and internationalization work started in recent years by the university governance. The University of Calabria is the only regional academic institution included in the ranking map released yesterday. Rector Leone beamed: «The reconfirmation of Unical within the QS World University Rankings 2025, which reviews the best universities worldwide, confirms the quality of our university. Not only are we present among the best in the world but, compared to last year, Unical improves its positioning by 50 places and expands the presence of excellent areas with the new entry of Chemistry and the further advancement in the ranking of Computer Science. Although international rankings should be interpreted with caution, given the complexity of the evaluation criteria, it is nevertheless noteworthy that the University of Calabria is currently present in all the most authoritative global academic rankings and tops the national Censis ranking. This demonstrates the growing recognition of the quality of research and teaching offered at an international level.”
The Arcavacata campus has become a point of reference for the student population as confirmed by incontrovertible data: the university, in fact, went from 3,834 students enrolled in 2019/2020 to 4,704 in 2023/2024 with a clear percentage growth, which is the highest among all the large southern state universities, including the mega universities, and records one of the highest rates of development among all the universities in Italy.
This is certainly due to the courageous and profound revision of the training offer «which has been updated globally» states Leone «making the courses innovative and in step with the times, offering cutting-edge programs that respond to the needs of the world of work. But also to the high qualification of the teaching staff, strengthened by recruitment policies aimed at attracting highly qualified scholars, and also focusing on the “return of brains””.
The University of Arcavacata has worked hard to recruit teachers – some very famous – from foreign universities. Among these is the IT luminary Georg Gottlob, an expert in Artificial Intelligence studies, who left Oxford to come and teach in Calabria. The scholar actually chose to live, together with his wife, in Paola. Not only that: Unical has also activated the course in Medicine, fully supporting the public health of Cosentino, guaranteeing the contribution of its teachers to various important departments of the Annunziata hospital in Cosenza. The university is fully integrated with the territory: yesterday, for example, the Nursing Sciences course was inaugurated in the heart of the historic center of the Bruzio capital. A fact that was unthinkable until ten years ago.
