Following a complex investigation activity started in 2024, coordinated by the carabinieri of the Aspromonte National Park of Reggio Calabriathe soldiers of the “Park” Carabinieri Unit of Gambarie d’Aspromonte have carried out, in recent days, to an ordinance of application of precautionary measurement staff, issued by the investigating judge of the Court of Palmi, against a subject residing in the municipal area of Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte. The provision is part of an articulated investigative activity aimed at contrast of environmental crimes in the protected area.
The investigations, ordered by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Palmi Court, concerned repeated episodes of aggravated theft of timber against a municipal propertylocated in the “Petrulli” locality, falling within the “C” area of the Aspromonte National Park. During the investigations, it also emerged The illegal management and combustion of waste, including out of use vehicles, with severe prejudice to the environment. Thanks to the use of technical observation tools (hidden cameras and GPS locators), it was possible to document and circumvent the illegal pipes, which led to the adoption of the precautionary measure of house arrest against the suspect. The hypothesized crimes include aggravated theft, receiving stolen goods, unauthorized management of waste and illegal combustion, in violation of the criminal code and of Legislative Decree 152/2006 in environmental matters.
The activity is part of a wider plan for the protection of the naturalistic heritage of Aspromonte, which sees the Carabinieri weapon engaged in the garrison of protected areas and in the systematic contrast to environmental crimes. The investigations continue under the direction of the competent judicial authority.
