The center-right wins the presidency of the Province of Cosenza. It is the second time in a row: Rosaria Succurro, exponent of Forza Italia, is succeeded by her party and alignment partner Biagio Faragalli. The former mayor of San Giovanni in Fiore ideally passes the baton to her counterpart from Montalto Uffugo.
The coalition that already governs the Region takes advantage – for a change – of the divisions that have characterized the center-left in this electoral campaign. The “wide field” was aiming for Franz Caruso, mayor of the capital, but perhaps the coalition was not as “broad” as was thought.
The composition of the Provincial Council
The majority obtains 8 of the 12 seats that make up the council. Here they are: Giuseppe Turano, municipal councilor of Corigliano-Rossano (Forza Italia), with 6,331 weighted votes; Antonino De Lorenzo, mayor of Praia a Mare (Ad Maiora), with 5,871 votes; Federico Belvedere, municipal councilor of Rende (Ad Maiora), with 5,348 votes; Silvio Cascardo, municipal councilor of Cerzeto (Forza Italia), with 5,291 votes; Gabriella Luciani, municipal councilor of Cetraro (Forza Italia), with 4,902 votes; Luigi Garofalo, municipal councilor of Cassano allo Ionio (Forza Italia), with 4,524 votes; Pasquale De Franco, mayor of Aieta (Ad Maiora), with 4,244 votes; Caterina Bruno, municipal councilor of San Lucido (Forza Italia), with 3,729 votes.
For the minority, the former president of the organization Graziano Di Natale, municipal councilor of Paola, elected on the “Democratic Province” list, with 5,005 weighted votes, returns to the council; together with him Antonio Uva, municipal councilor of Corigliano-Rossano (4,818 votes); Giuseppe Ciacco, municipal councilor of Cosenza (4,614 votes); and Francesco Beltrano, municipal councilor of Rende (3,230 votes).
However, the “Together for the Province” list, an expression of the centre-left area, which was left out of the distribution of seats, did not obtain representation.
The new leadership of the Province
President Biagio Faragalli will remain at the helm of the Province for the next three years. His party has five elected councilors; two are from Fratelli d’Italia, Pasquale De Franco and Antonino De Lorenzo, mayors of Aieta and Praia a Mare respectively; while Southern Italy–League will have Rendese municipal councilor Federico Belvedere in its assembly.
The announcement of those elected is scheduled for 10am.
The words of the new president
«I welcome this result – declared Biagio Faragalli – with a great sense of responsibility and profound gratitude. I will be the president of all the territories of the province, with the aim of strengthening the role of the provincial body and working in full synergy with the municipalities and local institutions. From today we begin a new phase, characterized by dialogue and responsibility. We will work with determination to enhance the potential of our province and to offer concrete answers to citizens.”
