No step backwards on the tourist tax, which from this year has been extended by the Municipality to accommodation facilities for all 365 days.
The mayor Sergio Pititto expressed willingness not to apply the new rules only to tourism entrepreneurs who closed contracts in 2024. On Thursday afternoon he received some entrepreneurs (among the most solid, given that they are capable of changing the average of takings, as they represent at least 60 % of the tax paid) who a few months ago formed the “Let’s Defend the Sea” Committee.
During the meeting, some adjustments were examined and agreed upon with respect to the changes made, including the reduction from 14 to 10 days (compared to the previous 7) of the maximum number of days for which the tax is paid; while the question of the age from which to apply it remains pending. Pititto reserved the right to consult with the technical-accounting part of the offices. The revenue generated by the tax will be reinvested in services, with a particular focus on public transport. For Pititto it is important to facilitate the connection between tourist villages and the centre, also for needs such as pharmacies, banks and ATMs. «We are ready – underlined the mayor, addressing entrepreneurs in the sector – and I am waiting to know your needs in terms of stops and times. We will evaluate 4 pairs of morning, 2 afternoon and 2 evening runs, to get them out often, and also adapted to the needs of the staff”.
