The secretariats of the Pollino Sibaritide Tirreno district CGIL and the Cosenza provincial CISL, after the ambush which took place in Cassano all’Ionio, which cost the life of a woman wife of an ‘Ndrangheta boss who was the target of the commando, in a statement, express «deep concern for an episode which – we read – calls everyone to collective responsibility. The event, in which a woman lost her life, represents an extremely serious event. Faced with the risk of a new criminal escalation in Sibaritide, we cannot allow fear and violence to become part of the daily life of our communities.”

The union secretariats make an appeal to the Prefecture «so that attention is kept high on the territory and all the initiatives necessary to strengthen the security and presence of the State are promoted, through the involvement of institutions and social forces. Sincere thanks – we then read – go to the police and the judiciary for the commendable work carried out daily in combating crime and protecting people. Their commitment is fundamental and must be supported with adequate resources, tools and conditions. However, the response – it should be noted – cannot be limited to repression. Alongside the indispensable action of the police and the judiciary, it is necessary to invest in prevention, education, work and opportunities for the young generations. We need to strengthen the culture of legality and build a community capable of recognizing itself in the values of justice, solidarity and respect for the rules.”

CGIL and CISL reiterate that «the fight against crime also involves the defense of decent work, the promotion of regular employment and the strengthening of social cohesion. Where opportunities and trust are lacking, it is more difficult to build concrete alternatives to criminal logic. For this – they argue – a common and continuous commitment is necessary which involves institutions, schools, the world of work, associations and the entire community. The public assembly promoted today by the mayor of Cassano all’Ionio and the bishop of the diocese, to discuss the public order situation and the initiatives to be taken, also fits in this direction”.

The two trade union organizations will participate with their own delegation, it is written, «in the belief that it is fundamental to contribute to a shared path of discussion and commitment to safety and legality. Security is a right, legality a collective responsibility. We cannot accept resignation or addiction to violence. We need a firm, united and concrete response – CGIL and CISL argue – capable of restoring serenity to people and trust in institutions”.
