A long round of applause for Antigone by Sophocles, the second tragedy of the 61st season of classical performances of the Inda Foundation. The audience of a sold out Greek theater gave the loudest applause to the director, the Canadian Robert Carsen, who completed the trilogy (after Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus).
A recognition that also came from the National Institute of Ancient Drama which, at the end of the show, awarded him the 2026 Golden Aeschylus, the recognition given to personalities who have distinguished themselves in classical theater and in studies on Greek and Latin classicism. «For the extraordinary ability to combine rigorous respect for the classic text with a bold, original and universal scenic vision – we read in the motivation -. (…) Carsen was able to weave the three Sophoclean dramas dedicated to Oedipus into a unified work of rare visual and intellectual power. Through a direction faithful to the soul of the myth but capable of speaking to the present, he transformed the ancient scene into an astonishing and contemporary space for reflection.”
For this latest work, Carsen lets the text speak. Radu Boruzescu’s scene is a monolithic staircase destroyed by the war that has just ended with the signs of the volleys of bullets. The agora turns into a cemetery. A tragically current work, where Antigone, a courageous woman who follows her principles, represents an example in an era in which values are distorted. Even if the people often choose the Creon of the moment.
And today the Inda Foundation will inaugurate the XXX edition of the International Festival of Classical Youth Theater in Palazzolo Acreide. Until June 3, over 2000 young people will perform in the Greek theater of the archaeological area of Akrai; there are 105 schools coming from all over Italy and also from European countries such as Greece, Belgium, France and Luxembourg. The Festival will be inaugurated by the Don Milani high school of Acquaviva delle Fonti (Bari) with the show Lisistrata.
