A new and worrying collapse of the rocky wall occurred in the night between 6 and 7 June in Passo Cavaliere, in the south of the municipal area of Tropea. The rocky detachment (as evidenced by the video shot by Vittorio Zaccaro) concerns in particular the area adjacent to the so -called “Scaletta del Parking of the Carabinieri”, secondary access to the beaches below, including the very popular beach of Rocca Nettuno. The exact coordinates of the landslide event are: latitude 38 ° 40’24.13 “n – longitude 15 ° 53’4.44” and, an area already known for its geological fragility and reported for some time as at hydrogeological risk.

The alarm of the former municipal councilor Antonio Pisàrà

Antonio Pisà, a former city councilor launched the alarmwho sent a formal and urgent report addressed to: extraordinary commissioners of the Municipality of Tropea, prefect of Vibo Valentia, Provincial Command of the Fire Brigade, Port Authority – Maritime District Office of Vibo Valentia. In the note, Pisà highlighted how the event is not isolated or unpredictable, but on the contrary, it has been part of a framework of structural danger known for years. The same area, in fact, had already been affected by serious collapses in 2012 and 2016, never followed by decisive or consolidation interventions. On 5 September 2024, Pisà had sent the municipal technical office a detailed report (protocol no. 26496), urged urgent interventions for the safety of the ridge and the access routes below.

Months later, nothing has been done. Requests made urgently: joint and immediate technical inspection of the competent authorities, to evaluate the extent of the collapse and residual risks; Closing and physical interdiction of the entire area, both from the ground and from the sea, with particular reference to access from the “Carabinieri Scaletta” and to the beach of Rocca Nettuno; Employment of a commissioner ordinance of interdiction of the area, in order to prevent access to the numerous tourists and citizens who, unaware of the danger, could be exposed to very serious consequences.

“The collapse that took place confirms unfortunately – underlines Pisà – the concerns already expressed last year. We cannot continue to ignore signals so evident. It is unacceptable that an area with a very high tourist attendance is left in conditions of evident geological instability,” said Pisà. “We need immediate, decisive and coordinated intervention. The safety of citizens and tourists cannot be postponed or underestimated. Reports will be clear to everyone in case of further tragic events “.

Antonio Pisà’s report is part of a context of growing attention to the fragility of the Tropean territory, in which the phenomenon of coastal erosion and structural sagging represents an urgent and concrete challenge for those who govern and administer. human life and the natural heritage of the city of Tropea.
