University hospital in Cosenza, Iemma: “Now what will be the role of Dulbecco and Catanzaro in the regional health system?”

“Without giving rise to any controversy, nor fueling battles that are of no benefit to anyone, we take note of the signing of the agreement for the construction of the new university hospital of Cosenza, a large-scale project which will affect the Rende area and which involves the Calabria Region, the University of Calabria as well as the Municipality itself. However, the question arises legitimately: now that the framework of the healthcare system has changed, what will be the role of Catanzaro in this new healthcare and university structure?”. This is the question posed by the deputy mayor of the Municipality of Catanzaro, Giusy Iemma.

“The regional capital – Iemma recalled – saw the birth, many years ago, of the first faculty of Medicine and Surgery and a university hospital which trained generations of professionals and represent a fundamental presence for Calabria. The path that led to the birth of the unique Dulbecco company should have consolidated existing excellence towards the creation of a regional hub which, in terms of number of beds, would have been the primary reference around which material and immaterial resources and investments could converge. It is natural, therefore, to ask now – in front of the creation of a new health center of the same dimensions – what interventions and investments are also planned to safeguard and enhance the reality of Catanzaro, with a view to territorial balance and valorisation of the already existing heritage”.

“All this – concluded Iemma – in the belief that effective regional health planning must move in the name of complementarity and cooperation between territories, while guaranteeing healthy competitiveness and in compliance with transparent and measurable criteria. The administration remains available to do its part with a sense of institutional responsibility, but it is inevitable to demand clarity and an overview of the prospects that also concern our community”.
