The Golden Lion of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival goes to Kvinde Ukendt (Woman Unknown) by May el-Toukhy, a co-production between Denmark, Sweden and Latvia. This was decided by the jury chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal and composed of Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat and Johnnie To, after having viewed the 21 films in competition.
The prize list of the competition
The Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize went to Ga-Neung-Han Sa-Rang (Possible Love) by Lee Chang-dong, from South Korea, while the Silver Lion for Best Director was awarded to Ilya Khrzhanovsky for the film Dauco-production between Germany, France and Sweden.
The Volpi Cup for best male performance goes to John Malkovich, protagonist of Wild Horse Nine by Martin McDonagh; the one for best female performance went to Mathilde Arcel, in the film awarded the Golden Lion. The award for best screenplay was awarded to Stéphane Brizé, Coralie Amédéo and Olivier Gorce for A Bon Petit Soldatdirected by Brizé himself.
The Special Jury Prize went to Naza by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, from the United Kingdom. The Marcello Mastroianni Award for an emerging young actor or actress was awarded to Malou Khebizi in the film 15/18 (A Place to Heal) by Cédric Kahn.
Orizzonti, double prize for an Italian film
The Orizzonti jury, chaired by Valérie Donzelli with Peter Becker, Elizabeth Lo, David Pablos and Barbara Ronchi, viewed 19 feature films and 13 short films. The award for best film went to Un Detour par Diane (Diane in the Loop) by Ann Sirot and Raphaël Balboni, between Belgium and France; the one for best director to Jacqueline Lentzou for Mia Mera Sti Zoi Tis Tzo: Kefalaio Faidraco-production between Greece, Germany and France.
The Orizzonti Special Jury Prize was awarded to La Maison du Vent (House of the Wind) by Auguste Bernard Kouemo Yanghu. Laleh Marzban in was awarded for his performances Moragheb (Falling House) by Mohsen Gharaei and Riccardo Scamarcio in I Figli della Scimmia by Tommaso Landucci, an Italian film that also won the award for best screenplay, written by Landucci with Damiano Femfert. Best short film is Quelques Instants de Bonheur (A Few Moments of Happiness) by Shaden Safieddine Tazi.
First work, Classics and Venice Immersive
The Lion of the Future – «Luigi De Laurentiis» Venice First Film Award, awarded by the jury chaired by Carolina Cavalli with Akinola Davies Jr. and Ted Hope, again went to La Maison du Vent by Auguste Bernard Kouemo Yanghu. The Venezia Spotlight – Armani Beauty spectators’ award was won by Eu Contez (I Matter) by Alina Șerban.
The Venezia Classici jury, chaired by Daniele Vicari and made up of 24 students from cinema courses at Italian universities, awarded La Lunga Notte del ’43 by Florestano Vancini as the best restored film. In Venice Immersive, the jury led by Paul Raphaël with Négar Motevalymeidanshah and Kate Voet awarded the Grand Prize to The Pigeon Ring by Shixin Tao and Yuqi Zhang, the Special Prize to Out of the Ashes by Rory Mitchell and Nonny De La Peña and the Achievement Award to Empire at Sea by Peter Flaherty.
Lifetime Achievement Awards
The list of awards is completed by the 2026 Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement, awarded to George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn, the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award to Luca Guadagnino and the Campari Passion for Film Award to Serena Rossi.
