A three-week-old baby girl froze to death overnight in the al-Mawasi area, outside Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip. This was reported to the AP agency by Mahmoud al-Faseeh, father of the little victim of the cold winter in Gaza and the deprivations caused by the blockades and limitations on the supply of humanitarian aid by Israel in the ongoing conflict against Hamas.
The father said he wrapped the little girl in a blanket to keep her warm, but it wasn’t enough. Al-Faseeh, as also reported by al-Jazeera, explained that the tent they live in was not sealed from the wind and the ground was cold.
Last night temperatures dropped below 9 degrees. «It was very cold during the night and we adults couldn’t even handle it. We couldn’t stay warm,” she said, adding that Sila woke up crying three times. The next morning, they found her unconscious. “It was like a piece of wood,” concluded the father. The newborn was immediately taken to a nearby field hospital, but doctors’ attempts to resuscitate her were in vain, so she was declared dead from hypothermia. According to local medical sources cited by the Associated Press, Sila is the third child to die of cold in a few days.
