Dubbing, an all-Italian excellence, is not just technique and strategy, but an emotional feeling between the actor and the professional at the lectern, both participating in an analogue language that underlines meanings and gives meaning to the words. This is the premise of theeleventh edition of «Suggestioni dal set», an event on the show and its protagonists, conceived and hosted by the Messina journalist Marco Bonardellicollaborator of the Gazzetta, which took place at the Rome Film Festivalin the Spazio Lazio Terra di Cinema of the Auditorium Parco della Musica.
Introduced by Bonardelli on the basis of the memory of Michele Kalamera (voice of Clint Eastwood) and Dario Penne (Anthony Hopkins), who passed away last year, the meeting represented a discussion between many voices with great voice actors of yesterday and today, from which Unpublished aspects emerged of a profession that is often behind the scenes, but fundamental for the enjoyment of the audiovisual product.
«The voice actor-character dialectic between digital and analogue language. Dubbing as an emotional connection” is the title of the event, to reiterate in difficult times for the sector – touched by the threat of Artificial Intelligence – the importance of human talent in the success of a film, because, as Bonardelli underlined, «the emotional connection between voice actor and actor does not change with changes in technology».
The various interventions by the guests were illuminating, starting with Carlo Valli who, on the images of «Dead Poets Society», recalled the peculiarities of Robin Williams: «Extraordinary ability to embrace different registers in a single scene, even in the same ring; ironic and profound at the same time, as he was in life.”
Mario Cordova from Catania, voice actor for Richard Gereexalted his sensitivity, profound respect for others and commitment to humanitarian causes. Seeing him again in «Sommersby» she defined him as a profoundly sexy man, whatever he does: «When he speaks, moves or walks he is gentlemanly and casual; and then his way of blinking or turning around is typical.”
Mino Caprio, Martin Short’s voice actor, on the images of «Father of the Bride» reiterated the difficulty in reproducing his expressiveness through the voice: «He is frenetic, without pauses and this makes it tiring to follow him in these sudden jumps. Lately, in the series “Only Murders in The Building”, he has added grunts to his speech, and it has become very difficult to follow him».

For Benedetta Degli Innocenti, Lady Gaga’s voice also in the recent «Joker: Folie à deux», in competition at the Venice Film Festival, the actress and pop star is a sort of alter ego: «She is a woman with a strong personality and in in this last film I saw a new side of him, in the role of a highly negative character. She is the true antagonist of the story. I believe he can give even much more.”
Chiara Fabiano, voice of Jenna Ortega in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” by Tim Burton, reiterated that the dubber’s task is first and foremost to best reproduce everything the actor does: “I always hope to do her justice and I undertake to follow her in the minimal facets: the eyes, the movements of the face, even the imperceptible ones.”
