The progressive camp’s roadmap for the construction of an alternative government coalition to the center-right is strengthening and taking shape. At the end of a telephone conversation, the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein, the president of the M5s Giuseppe Conte and the leaders of the Green and Left Alliance, Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, outlined the roadmap that will guide the alliance in the coming months.

The program and the expansion of the coalition

Starting next week, the working groups dedicated to drafting the shared program will begin, with the aim of defining the final document by the end of November. All the opposition forces represented in Parliament who share the urgency of an alternative to the right will participate in the discussions. In addition to Pd, M5s and Avs, representatives of Italia Viva, +Europa, Più Uno (the formation led by Ernesto Maria Ruffini and Franco Gabrielli) and Progetto Civico (Alessandro Onorato’s party) will also sit at the table. The parliamentary presence of these last two forces has materialized recently: Più Uno benefits from the support of the deputy Bruno Tabacci, while Progetto Civico Italia is represented in the Senate by a newly formed component born thanks to the contribution of the symbol of the “Nuovo Psi” and the passage of the former M5s senator Luigi Nave.

The mobilization in December and the primaries in February

In addition to the programmatic work, the leaders agreed on two fundamental political steps: National mobilization in December: In conjunction with the discussion on the economic maneuver, a large national demonstration will be organized against the four years of Meloni’s government, accused of having caused the high cost of living, eliminated growth and increased inequalities. The event will be open to the contribution of social forces and civil society. The primaries are scheduled for February: the leadership of the coalition and the candidate for prime minister will be chosen through primary consultations, conceived as a central moment of democratic participation to guarantee unanimous and solid support from the entire progressive front.
