Protect compromised agricultural productionsafeguard the biodiversity of natural habitats, but also combat the spread of African swine fever (ASF). With these objectives the Regional Council, chaired by Roberto Occhiutoapproved the Extraordinary five-year regional plan for the management and containment of the wild boar species. This is an innovative and strategic tool, which represents a structured response to the problems connected to the excessive presence of wild boars in the Calabrian territory.
“The Plan – explains the regional councilor for agriculture Gianluca Gallo – is the result of a participatory process that involved regional institutions, agricultural and hunting associations and representatives of local authorities. For years our territory, like the rest of the national territory, has faced growing critical issues linked to the uncontrolled expansion of the wild boar population, with serious repercussions on agriculture, road safety and biodiversity. With this Plan we lay the foundations for sustainable and responsible management of wildlife.”
The Plan includes a set of concrete measures, developed to guarantee short and long-term results, such as selective control of the population through capture with traps, targeted culling and other innovative techniques, always respecting the environment and public safety; continuous monitoring of the presence of the species thanks to the use of advanced technological tools, which will allow dynamic and adaptive management; the implementation of preventive measures, such as the installation of fences in the most vulnerable agricultural areas, in order to reduce economic impacts.
A technical table, made up of institutional representatives, agricultural and hunting associations, will coordinate the implementation and monitoring of the plan, which will be applied throughout the regional territory and will last five years (2025-2029).
