Zaporizhzhia power plant at risk of blackout: nuclear safety alarm in Ukraine

For the third time in a monththe Ukrainian nuclear power plant of Zaporizhzhia is on the verge of blackout because of Russian bombings. It was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Energyas RBC-Ukraine reports.

«Because of enemy bombingthe Zaporizhzhia power plant lost power on one of the two external electrical transmission lines which connect the temporarily occupied plant with the unified energy system of Ukraine”, reads a note from the ministry.

Third blackout risk in November

According to the Ministry of Energyit is the third time in November that the external power supply of the power station, necessary for its safe operation, is at risk. «The high-voltage transmission line Ferrosplavnaya 1 it was turned off as a safeguard measure for the nuclear power plant”, the plant’s managers said in a statement.

The nuclear power plant Zaporizhzhia receives electricity from the right bank of the Dnieper controlled by Ukraine, via main lines from 750 kilovolts Dneprovskaya and reserve from 330 kilovolts Ferrosplavnaya-1.

Radioactive alarm in case of blackout

«Currently the power plant is powered by a single transmission line. If it is disconnected from external power, another complete blackout will occura scenario that represents a **radioactive threat”, warned the Ukrainian ministry.
