Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that discussions are underway with the United States on the possible deployment of American troops in Ukraine as part of a peace plan. The news was reported by the Ukrinform agency at the end of a press conference by the leader of Kiev. Responding to a question about security guarantees and whether Washington could deploy troops along the demarcation line or on the Ukrainian border, Zelensky stressed that the decision rests exclusively with the United States.

«Actually, this can only be confirmed by the president of the United States of America. These are US troops, and therefore America makes those decisions,” he said. The Ukrainian president added that the issue is the subject of discussion both with President Donald Trump and with representatives of the Coalition of the Willing.

Opening to a meeting with Vladimir Putin

During the press conference, Zelensky reiterated his availability for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, without placing limits on the format. «We believe that in January there is an opportunity for a joint meeting between the leaders of Europe, the United States and Ukraine. And we raised the question of a meeting with the Russians,” he explained. The leader of Kiev then clarified his position: «I told President Trump and the European leaders, and I confirm it again now: I am ready for any format of meeting with Putin. I am not afraid of any format of our meeting. The main thing is that the Russians are not afraid.”

Peace documents ready for signature in January

Zelensky also announced concrete progress on the diplomatic front, saying that some documents related to the peace process in Ukraine could be ready for signature as early as January. «There are documents that will certainly be ready for signature in January. This will depend on the capabilities and willingness of the parties to sign them,” he said.

The phased plan for the implementation of the agreement

The Ukrainian president clarified that there are six documents in total being negotiated and that the sixth represents a gradual plan for the implementation of the peace agreement and security guarantees. “Of the six documents, as I said, the sixth document is exactly the plan that we propose for discussion,” he explained. After the Berlin talks on December 16, Zelensky had already reported that five documents had been discussed: some concern security guarantees for Ukraine, others the post-war recovery and reconstruction of the country.

A decisive diplomatic phase

The Ukrainian president’s statements outline a particularly intense diplomatic phase ahead of the start of the new year. Kiev’s goal is to turn negotiations into concrete agreements, strengthen security guarantees and lay the foundations for lasting peace and the reconstruction of Ukraine.
