A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck northern Venezuela today, causing the precautionary evacuation of residential buildings, offices and shopping centers in Caracas, without any damage or casualties being reported. According to the Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis), the earthquake was recorded at 10.53 local time with an epicenter 10 kilometers north-east of Naiguatá, in the state of La Guaira, at a depth of 5.5 kilometres.
The link with the earthquake of 24 June
La Guaira is the area most affected by the double earthquake of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on 24 June. Numerous users on social media reported preventive evacuations in several neighborhoods of the capital, including Chacao, Plaza Venezuela, La Candelaria and Los Ruices.
The new seismic event has rekindled the fears of the population, still marked by the consequences of the earthquakes which, according to the official toll, caused almost 4,000 deaths.
