A gray-brown wolf, belonging to the protected species “Canis lupus italicus”, was saved by the forest carabinieri in “Gaccia” in the municipality of Pianopoli. The animal, in an evident state of suffering, had been trapped with a shoulder and neck in a metal noon positioned on a network.
The alarm was launched at 112, and a patrol of the Forestry Carabinieri Unit of Seatale intervened on the spot. Considering the difficulty of the operation, the support of specialized fauna staff of the biodiversity department of the carabinieri and veterinarians of the Wild Animal Recovery Center (Cras) of Catanzaro was requested.
Thanks to a timely intervention and the use of safe approach techniques, The rescuers managed to free the animal, which was sedated, medicated and finally reintroduced in its natural habitat.
In the meantime, the carabinieri of the forest specialty and the soldiers of the Pianopoli station have started an investigation to trace the author of the gesture, which had placed an illegal trap with a tiny steel noder. This cruel practice, prohibited by national and European legislation, represents a serious threat to wildlife.
The wolf is a rigorously protected species, whose capture or killing is strictly prohibited. Its ecological role is fundamental for the balance of natural ecosystems, and its protection is part of a wider regulatory framework aimed at preserving biodiversity.
