Inflation, Istat confirms: +0.6% in January; +1.5% on year

In January 2025, the national consumer price index for the entire community, gross of tobacco, increases by 0.6% compared to December 2024 and 1.5% compared to January 2024 (from +1.3% of the previous month), confirming the preliminary estimate. Istat detects it. The inflation acquired for 2025 is equal to +0.9% for the general EA +0.5% index for the basic component.
“In January 2025 – comments the Statistics Institute – inflation rises slightly, reaching 1.5% from 1.3% of December 2024. This trend mainly reflects the exhaustion of the explazing pushes of energy prices ( – – 0.7% from -2.8% of December), following the marked acceleration of the prices of the regulated component ( +27.5% from +12.7%). In the food sector, the price tendential dynamics remains stable on values ​​slightly higher than the inflation rate, As well as that of the “shopping cart” (stops at +1.7%). Among the services, the prices of those relating to transport are slowed down, while the rhythm of growth of recreational, cultural and personal care services rises. In January, background inflation remains stable at +1.8%”.
The tendential acceleration, explains Istat, is mainly due to the increase in the prices of regulated energy goods (from +12.7% to +27.5%), but also to the attention of the flexion of those of unregulated energy goods (from -4.2% to -3.0%) and the slight acceleration of the prices of Recreational, cultural and personal care services (from +3.1% to +3.3%). These effects were only partially compensated by the deceleration of the prices of transport services (from +3.6% to +2.5%).
In January the “basic inflation”, net of energy and fresh food, remains stable (at +1.8%), while the one net of the energy goods only slightly rises (from +1.7% to +1.8%).
The tendential dynamics of goods prices highlights an acceleration (from +0.2%to +0.7%), while that of the services remains stable (to +2.6%). The inflationary differential between the service sector and that of the goods is reduced, leading to +1.9 percentage points (from +2.4 of December 2024).
The economic increase of the general index reflects the evolution of the prices of regulated energy (+14.2%) and unregulated (+2.7%), of processed and unrelated food (+0.9%both), durable goods (+0.6%), services relating to the home, recreational, cultural and personal care services and various services (+0.4% for all three). On the contrary, an effect of containing the economic dynamics of the general index is due to the decrease in the prices of transport services (-2.3%).
The harmonized index of consumer prices (IPCA) decreases by 0.8% on a monthly basis, due to the start of the winter sales and footwear sales (not considered for the NIC index), and increases by 1.7 % on an annual basis (in acceleration from +1.4% of December 2024), confirming the preliminary estimate. The national consumer price index for families of workers and employees (foi), net of tobacco, grows by 0.6% compared to December and 1.3% compared to January 2024.
