«The constant and continuous prevalence of disruption highlights the failure of the rebalancing procedure which, in the region, has shown itself to be absolutely incapable of achieving financial recovery». This can be read in the report by the president of the control section of the Court of Auditors, Fabrizio Carrarini, on the occasion of the inauguration of the judicial year. In fact, Calabria holds the record for municipalities in financial crisis.
«A number even higher than Sicily and Campania» writes Carrarini in his report. In 2025 there will be 350 active procedures, with an increase of 15 units compared to the previous year. Specifically, these are 226 declarations of failure and 124 requests for rebalancing. In 2024, however, the procedures activated were 335 (217 declarations of failure and 118 requests for rebalancing). The municipalities involved were 217 (53.7% of the total) with 1.2 million inhabitants (equal to 66.9%) of the regional population. The metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, and the municipalities of Cosenza and Vibo Valentia, Lamezia Terme and Rende are also in bankruptcy proceedings.
