No duels, no poisons, just listening to the citizens. After an overly aggressive start to the electoral campaign, Marcello Scurria, mayoral candidate of the centre-right, is the first to try to tone down the dispute. Aware of the fact that, moreover, there is still a long way to go before the vote. «The local elections are not an OK Corral style western duel – states the lawyer, founder of the “Participazione” civic movement –, even if there are those who proclaim themselves good with the aim of eliminating the bad. Politics is something else.” The obvious reference, although undeclared, is to the continuous “teases” of the leader of South Calls North, Cateno De Luca.
But Scurria seems not to want to fall into the “trap”: «The logic of the duel does not belong to me – he adds -. The political confrontation cannot be reduced to a direct clash between two opposing camps. Citizens are underestimated when we think according to an extreme simplification: it’s not us against them. So let’s say no to the delegitimization of the opponent. For us there is no enemy to defeat. Even those who, as political leaders, position themselves as “sheriff” who defends the people against their enemies should understand this. For us, discussion, implementation of ideas and concrete solutions are the guiding stars. We are working on a proposal based on listening and building new perspectives – concludes Scurria – and once we are in government of the city we will remain available to the citizens”. A course of action, perhaps even a change of direction in communication. The road is still long.
