Since former senator Angelo Giorgianni, alongside mayoral candidate Gaetano Sciacca, triggered the “mine” of doubt about the timing of Federico Basile’s resignation as mayor, the topic has become part of an electoral campaign that already began with the volume at maximum. Giorgianni’s thesis is that Basile’s resignation should have become effective by February 24th, and not the 27th as actually happened, in order for it to be possible to vote in the first available session, i.e. the spring one. The publication of the regional council resolution which starts the process for calling elections for 24 and 25 May, with a list of municipalities that includes Messina, was of little avail. The replies and considerations of other participants in the electoral race, on both sides, were also of little value. The mine was triggered, so 118 citizens even presented a complaint to the local authorities of the Region.
So it is now the president of the city council, Nello Pergolizzi, who intervenes, trying to clear the field of misunderstandings. Who recalls – considering that Giorgianni’s thesis takes national legislation as a reference – that «Sicily is a Region with a special statute and, precisely by virtue of this autonomy, the matter of local authorities, including the electoral system of the Municipalities, is governed by its own regional legislation».
