The difficult story of the group of citizens who were stranded in the United Arab Emirates due to the international crisis in the Middle East ended in the best possible way.
On the night between 7 and 8 March, the ten fellow citizens landed at Lamezia Terme airport and finally embraced their loved ones. The Municipal Administration of Rende, which has tirelessly followed the evolution of the situation, welcomes the news with profound relief. The mayor, Sandro Principe, from the moment he learned of the difficulties encountered by fellow citizens residing in Dubai, had mandated the offices to activate a constant channel with the Farnesina Crisis Unit and requested an intervention that would guarantee assistance and safety to our fellow citizens. The Municipal Administration reiterates that “the monitoring does not stop”: the offices remain on alert to verify whether there are other fellow citizens still present in the crisis areas and to provide them with all the necessary institutional support.
With the group’s return to Lamezia Terme, a page of great apprehension for “our community ends and the importance of an attentive and reactive institutional presence to protect its citizens, wherever they are”, is confirmed by the Municipality. The sudden closure of regional airspace, resulting from the worsening of international tensions in the Middle East starting from February 28th, had led to the total blocking of flights and many Italians found themselves in a condition of extreme logistical and psychological uncertainty. The Municipal Administration immediately contacted the Ministry in charge as soon as it received news of the serious difficulties encountered by fellow citizens. The Mayor of Rende had given immediate instructions to start contacts with the Farnesina Crisis Unit. “The Administration also monitors with particular care the position of the youngest, including high school and Unical students who have launched appeals through the national media in which they described their strong exhaustion”, the municipality of Oltre Campagnano had announced. The institutional monitoring activity was conducted with the utmost thoroughness, remaining ready to intervene and support any other fellow citizen who found themselves in the same emergency situation. “The Administration is close to the families who have experienced hours of worry.”
