Calabria walks slowly and full of suffering, amidst the difficulties of this period. A scenario described by the thousand voices of economic and social reports, by dry diagrams and severe percentages that narrate a land that is slipping into the most fragile quadrant of the country, where the crying of the last risks turning into a mass lament. First the pandemic, then the war in Ukraine, then the tariffs, finally the conflict in the Middle East: a sequence of shocks that narrowed the margins and swelled the river of poverty. There is an increase in the number of homes where unpaid bills, pending installments and deferred payments accumulate. The difficulty of those who try to stay afloat while the water rises is growing. It is not surprising that, even in 2025, Calabria remains last in Italy for risk of poverty and social exclusion: the Istat figure stands at 45.3%, an improvement compared to 2024 but still far from the rest of the country. At the same time, the most exposed group, that at risk of poverty, is growing, reaching 32.8% of the population.
