The Catanzaro police commissioner has issued a detention order against a Nigerian citizen, deemed dangerous for public order and safety. The measure was adopted as part of the prevention and control activities of the territory.

This morning, the Flying Police officers accompanied the man to the Immigration Office of the Police Headquarters, following specific monitoring services. The subject, who had been homeless for some time, used to frequent a local solidarity soup kitchen.

According to what emerged, several reports had been received against him for harassing behavior and aggressive attitudes towards passers-by, even though no formal complaints had ever been made. A request for international protection is also pending at the Territorial Commission of Crotone. At the end of the administrative investigation, the Police Commissioner ordered detention pursuant to Article 6 of Legislative Decree 142/2015, a provision which must be validated by the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro.

The man was then transferred to the Repatriation Center in Bari, where the procedures required by current legislation for the evaluation of the request for international protection will be carried out. The operation took place after the health checks necessary to verify his suitability to stay in the facility.

The intervention falls within the framework of the prevention activities of the Catanzaro Police Headquarters, aimed at ensuring safety and compliance with the rules. The State Police also reminds citizens of the possibility of using the “YouPol” app to report episodes of violence, drug dealing and other crimes in real time, even anonymously.

Applause from Wanda Ferro

«I would like to express my applause to the Police Commissioner Giuseppe Linares and to all the staff of the State Police of the Catanzaro Police Headquarters for the timeliness and professionalism demonstrated in the adoption of the detention measure against a Nigerian citizen considered dangerous for public order and safety, having displayed harassing and aggressive behaviour. This is the subject at the center of a report aired on the program Fuori dal Coro, which had turned the spotlight on an evidently critical situation.” This is what the Undersecretary of the Interior, Hon. Wanda Ferro, according to whom «the intervention of the State Police confirms how the institutions are present and able to respond promptly when conditions of risk for the community emerge. At the same time, this story demonstrates how fundamental the collaboration of citizens is. Reporting, denouncing and not underestimating harassing or aggressive behavior is a civic duty that allows the police to intervene in an even more effective and timely manner.”

«Security is built together: with attentive and present institutions, but also with a vigilant and responsible community. In this case the contribution of the media was also invaluable. The Government – concludes Undersecretary Wanda Ferro – will continue to support the work of the police forces with determination, strengthening the prevention and control tools of the territory, to protect citizens and the rule of law”.
