Antonino La Scala, a 48-year-old from Vibo Valentia who moved to the Florentine area, was sentenced to life imprisonment, accused of killing and setting on fire the over-80-year-old spouses Umberto Della Nave and Dina Del Lungo. The crime occurred in December 2023 in Osteria Nuova (in the municipality of Bagno a Ripoli), although initially the tragedy seemed to be attributed to the accidental fire of an electric armchair. The carabinieri then discovered blood in the apartment and by delving into the lives of the two elderly couple, the figure of the 48-year-old emerged, to whom Della Nave had lent money on several occasions. The motive for the crime, according to the reconstruction of the prosecution and endorsed by the assize court of Florence, was precisely that debt which the accused thus avoided honouring. On the occasion of the double murder, La Scala would also have appropriated money that the elderly had at home and of which he knew the hiding place.
