40 years have passed since the killing of the lawyer Nino D’Uva, victim of a mafia attack. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Association that bears his name has decided to remember him with the event “On the notes of memory” which will be held today at 6.30 pm at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele, through the testimonies of the procedural events of the time.

Trust the doctor. Italo Materia, prosecutor at the maxi-trial, to the lawyer Massimo Marchese, defender at the maxi-trial, and to the lawyer Alberto Gullino, lawyer for the civil party at the trial for the D’Uva murder. Then the memory of the family: the children Giuseppina and Gennaro, and the nephew, Francesco, former member of the parliamentary anti-mafia commission. The event, moderated by Nuccio Anselmo, will also see musical performances by Luisa Grasso and Daniele Testa. Closing the speeches were the current president and one of the founding members of the Association, lawyers Filippo Di Blasi and Francesco Rizzo. Paolo Vermiglio, president of the Bar Association, and the president of the Naval League, lawyer Alessandro Billè, will also speak.

The nephew of the lawyer D’Uva, who bears his name, remembers him in the Gazzetta with a touching letter: «I have the honor of calling myself like my grandfather. When he was killed by the mafia, in Messina on 6 May 1986, I had just turned one and I have no memories of moments spent with him. Only the photographs remain of my first birthday party, taken a few weeks before his death. Images of happiness and serenity in the family before the tragedy. Yet, thanks to the stories of his family and the people who loved him and esteemed him, and to the commemorations that have intensified over the last twenty years, I have always felt his presence. Many tell me that I resemble him physically, especially when I wear glasses, and in some character traits. Like him, I love art, literature, music and the sea, and perhaps what I missed most was the chance to live and cultivate our passions together. However, when I read certain authors, listen to some melodies or find myself in front of a sunset over the sea, sometimes I feel that a connection is established between me and him. His example marked my path and it is also why I chose to dedicate myself to legal studies. When I think of my grandfather, the lawyer. Nino D’Uva, I feel pride and melancholy. Pride in remembering what he represented as a professional and as a man, melancholy for everything we didn’t experience together. As Ezra Pound wrote, “What you truly love is your true inheritance.” The legacy my grandfather left is his love for the toga, for family, for art and beauty.”
