The earth trembles and together with fear the trap of fake news is triggered. In the aftermath of the strong earthquake that shook the whole of Southern Italy, there was a serious and deplorable episode of digital profiteering which raised the level of concern immediately after the strong earthquake, pushing some to take to the streets for fear of collapses. In fact, a few hours after the seismic event, a photo of an alleged and disastrous collapse of a pylon in the atrium of the former Rossano court in the Byzantine historic center began to circulate on chats. The verification machine was set in motion instantly. The municipal technicians, assisted by the police and the men of Prociv, led by the mayor, also following an urgent inspection of the structure, reassured the population: the atrium did not suffer any damage and no pylon ever came down. The one bounced off thousands of smartphones was, to all intents and purposes, a false, artificial photo created with the sole and cynical objective of generating misinformation. «There are some photos of collapsed columns going around. I went to the places to make sure they were fake”, Mayor Flavio Stasi was “forced” to comment on social media.
