“It was an episode of unprecedented severity both in terms of objectivity, 4 deaths, and in terms of its methods.” This was stated by the prosecutor of Castrovillari Alessandro D’Alessio in the meeting with journalists at the police station in Cosenza on the massacre of the Amendolara workers. «The episode was completely reconstructed in just a few hours, almost like an arrest in flagrante delicto. Investigations have allowed us to collect, with all the necessary precautions, the evidence of a crime. I appreciated, and we all must do so, yet another prompt response from the State. We owe it above all to the people of the South.”
We are investigating the motive for the massacre of the workers
“Motive and context are not strong at the moment because we have been working for 48 hours.” This was stated by the Prosecutor of the Republic of Castrovillari Alessandro D’Alessio, thus explaining that the motive for the massacre of the Amendolara laborers has not yet been ascertained for investigators.
«When an episode like this happens – he added – the first objective is to give an identity to the suspects in order to then reach a level of circumstantial gravity that leads us to build the evidentiary framework. Obviously we couldn’t give all the elements. We start from a formulation of hypotheses then the skill lies in the rigor of investigation. It is a story in which I appreciated the high professionalism of the Cosenza Flying Squad for the difficulty, including the territory, and the promptness with which it intervened. There was no operational conflict between the police forces that intervened. Everyone worked to achieve the same goal.”
The magistrate then did not answer the journalists’ questions: “If we don’t answer – he said – it is only for the sake of respect for the law and the effectiveness of the investigation because it continues with seriousness, team spirit and rigor because we think about what we can demonstrate”.
Gangmastering and war for control of the fields were the tracks followed
«The gangmaster is one of the leads, but not the only one». Thus the Castrovillari prosecutor Alessandro D’Alessio responded during the press conference to reporters who asked him if among the hypotheses of the massacre of the laborers in Amendolara there could be a clash between groups for the control of work in the fields. “We are still investigating the context,” he added. «At this moment the circumstantial framework has been aimed at identifying the perpetrators» of the murder «and we are thus submitting it to the judge. Obviously every action always has a framework and a context and we are working on that too.” The victims, the prosecutor then explained, were all in Italy with a regular residence permit and had no criminal record and had been present in Italy for years.
