The mayor of Tropea, Giovanni Macrì, re-elected in the administrative elections of 24 and 25 May, has appointed his own municipal council and among the councilors there are two “unpresentables” declared as such by the parliamentary anti-mafia commission, plus one on whom – together with the mayor himself – a request for ineligibility for two electoral rounds made by the Ministry of the Interior to the Court of Vibo Valentia is pending.
The findings of the Anti-Mafia Commission and the previous dissolution
In particular, on 19 May the parliamentary anti-mafia commission declared the re-nominated mayor Giovanni Macrì and the outgoing councilors Greta Trecate and Caterina Marzolo “unpresentable” (as they violate the ethical code of parties regarding candidacies) as they were all part of the previous administration of Tropea dissolved in April 2024 due to mafia infiltration, with the dissolution confirmed by the TAR and the Council of State.
The Interior Ministry’s request for ineligibility for candidacy
Furthermore, the request for ineligibility made by the Interior Ministry to the Court of Vibo is pending against the re-elected mayor Giovanni Macrì and the councilor Greta Trecate as the two administrators, with their conduct and family ties, are considered by the minister Matteo Piantedosi to be among those responsible for the dissolution of the Municipality of Tropea due to mafia infiltration.
The appointments of Massimo L’Andolina and Romana Lorenzo
Massimo L’Andolina, who in 2018 was among Giovanni Macrì’s challengers for mayor, was appointed as deputy mayor, and as a minority councilor had repeatedly requested the sending of a Commission for access to documents to the Municipality of Tropea on the basis of anti-mafia legislation. Finally, Romana Lorenzo was also appointed councilor, already part of another municipal council of Tropea which was also dissolved in 2016 due to mafia infiltration.
