The Crotone Harbor Master’s Office has recovered 57 migrants from the sea who landed in the port this morning. The group was on board a sailing boat intercepted 80 miles from the Calabrian coast, in the border waters between Italy and Greece, after having left about a week ago from Marmaris, Turkey. The rescue operation proved to be particularly complex due to the adverse sea conditions, characterized by sea force 4. To guarantee the safety of the migrants during the delicate transhipment procedures, the Coast Guard requested the intervention of a merchant ship transiting the area, which acted as a shelter, dampening the power of the waves.

The arrival at the dock and the welcome car

The arrival at the dock of the port of Crotone took place shortly after 8. The disembarkation operations were coordinated by the Prefecture of Crotone and supervised by the Immigration Office of the local Police Headquarters. Among the migrants – originally from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Egypt – there are also 11 women and 6 children aged between 2 and 8, all traveling with their respective families.

The health budget and transfer

The staff of the Vulnerability Office of the ASP of Crotone checked the clinical conditions of the migrants directly on site. The general state of health was good, with the exception of a slight illness suffered by an elderly woman due to seasickness. Once the initial reception and identification procedures were concluded, the Prefecture arranged for the entire group to be transferred to the Isola Capo Rizzuto reception centre.

Two landings in three days in the Crotone area

This morning’s landing represents the second landing recorded in Crotone in just three days. Last June 1, another 29 people had arrived in Calabria, rescued in that case by a Romanian patrol vessel.
