An important international recognition for Italian medicine and scientific research comes from a professor at the University of Calabria. Ciro Indolfi, professor of Cardiology, currently president of the “Per il Tuo Cuore” Foundation of the Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) and Past-President of the same SIC, was elected with broad consensus in the prestigious Nominating Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

The Nominations Committee represents one of the most important bodies of the ESC and is called upon to identify and propose candidates for the main elective positions in European cardiology, starting from the members of the Board of Directors.

Indolfi’s election will guarantee that the selection processes of the European leadership are inspired by criteria of competence, transparency, independence and representativeness of the different national realities. In the new role, the Italian scientist will represent the perspective of the 57 European Cardiological Societies and the entire Mediterranean basin affiliated to the ESC.

The role of Ciro Indolfi in Italian cardiology

Pioneer of interventional cardiology and academic leader, Ciro Indolfi was the founder of University Cardiology in Calabria. Throughout his career he has promoted cutting-edge research programs and developed innovative care pathways.

In the past he also held the positions of president of the Italian Federation of Cardiology (FIC) and of the Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology (GISE).

«This election – comments Indolfi – represents an important recognition especially for Italian cardiology, an opportunity to contribute to the development of future strategies of European cardiology, with particular attention to the possibility of having a National Strategic Plan for Cardiovascular Health in the coming years to reduce the first cause of death in Italy».

Commitment to the National Strategic Plan for Cardiovascular Health

According to Indolfi, European cardiology is today engaged in a vast program aimed at strengthening the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, which still represent the main cause of death in Europe too.

«Unlike the oncology field, in which Italy has long boasted a well-structured National Oncology Plan, in our country there was a lack of a similar strategic tool for heart health, despite it not being a low-risk area at all», says Indolfi.

The Italian Federation of Cardiology, coordinated by Indolfi and supported by the European Society of Cardiology, has developed the first National Strategic Plan for Cardiovascular Health, with the aim of reducing mortality and improving prevention in the four-year period 2026-2029.
