The thick smoke, visible from miles away, abruptly reignited fear along the coast. A large fire broke out around 2pm in the Calami area, between Gliaca di Piraino and Gioiosa Marea. The flames quickly engulfed the dense vegetation of the rocky ridge overlooking the main road, a vital artery for connections in the area recently reopened to traffic after more than two months of closure, inconvenience and protests. The images of the fire immediately reopened fears related to the safety of the area, but the rapid and massive intervention of the emergency services prevented the fire from causing much more serious damage to nearby homes and public safety.
The mayor of Piraino, Salvatore Cipriano, present on site during the operations, expressed his thanks to all the operators and volunteers involved in a note.
“Thanks to the professionalism and speed of the interventions we managed to contain and tame the flames – said the mayor – protecting everyone’s safety and limiting the damage to the environmental heritage”.
The mayor gave special praise to the firefighters, the civil protection volunteers, the Rangers International delegation of Piraino and the local police station. Particular recognition went to the Forestry Corps of the Sicilian Region (Sant’Angelo di Brolo detachment), led by the superior inspector Calogerino Fabio and the agent Calogero Gumina who managed the interventions of the aerial vehicles with great skill.
