In Reggio Calabria, the date of the elections for the renewal of the Metropolitan Council of Palazzo Alvaro was made official, through union decrees n. 45 and n. 46 signed by the new mayor of the Municipality of Reggio Calabria, the Honorable Francesco Cannizzaro, who, based on article 1 of the law of 7 April 2014, automatically also assumes the role of Metropolitan Mayor.
In fact, it is up to the mayor of the capital municipality, as the competent authority, to call the elections of the Metropolitan Council, which must be convened within 60 days of the proclamation. This procedure is necessary in the event of renewal of the municipal council of the capital, automatically resulting in the renewal of the metropolitan body.
The polls will open on July 19th from 8 am to 8 pm, at the headquarters of Palazzo Corrado Alvaro, headquarters of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, where the voting operations for the formation of the new Metropolitan Council will take place.
These are second level elections: the new Council will be made up of the Metropolitan Mayor and 14 councillors, chosen from among the mayors and municipal councilors in office in the Municipalities belonging to the Metropolitan City.
The electoral system provides for direct, free and secret voting on competing lists. The lists must be presented by 29 June 2026 and must include a number of candidates not less than half of the available seats, as well as be supported by at least 5% of those entitled to vote.
“As I anticipated during the statements made to journalists on the evening of the proclamation of the office of Mayor, the elections for the renewal of the Metropolitan Council of the City of Reggio Calabria will take place on Sunday 19 July. For this reason – underlined Cannizzaro – I signed the decree calling the electoral rallies yesterday and today the decree establishing the electoral office, formally following up on what was announced in recent days.”
