Fuel sting: Italy black mark in the EU due to the May price increases. Diesel +29%, petrol 16% compared to 2025

Between April and May this year, 23 EU countries observed an increase in the price of petrol, with the sharpest increase in Italy (+6.9%). This is certified by Eurostat data on the trend in fuel prices. Overall, in May there was an increase of 29.0% for diesel and 16.2% for petrol compared to the same month in 2025. On a monthly basis, however, EU consumers observed a reduction in diesel prices of 5.8%, and an increase in petrol prices of 0.8% compared to April 2026.

Also in April, diesel increased by 7.9% and petrol by 2.4% compared to March this year. Between April and May, diesel prices increased only in Romania (+1.6%) and decreased in the other EU countries. In Italy the drop was 4%. As for petrol, after Italy, prices increased the most in Croatia and Hungary (+0.1%). In contrast, Germany (-5.6%), Ireland (-2.0%) and Sweden (-0.7%) recorded declines in May compared to the previous month.
