The discussion on car tax and regional tax policies becomes an opportunity to bring back to the center of the debate a proposal that Pasquale Tridico had already put forward during the electoral campaign and which today the Tridico President group is asking to be translated into a concrete initiative by the Calabria Region.

The topic was relaunched by the group leader Enzo Bruno, who spoke in the Regional Council to ask the Council and the majority to evaluate the introduction of the exemption from paying the road tax for hybrid vehicles, following the example of numerous Italian regions that have already adopted similar measures.

The debate in the Council and the national comparison

«Pasquale Tridico had already raised the issue of car tax during the electoral campaign, promoting a reflection that had a national value but which can and must also be applied at a regional level», states Bruno. «Today, while we are engaged in the budget implementation phase, we believe that it is the right time to open a serious discussion on a measure that would have positive effects on both an economic and environmental level».

The Tridico Presidente group leader explains that the proposal arises from the desire to align Calabria with the regions that have chosen to encourage more sustainable forms of mobility through tax breaks. «There are regions such as Basilicata, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna which provide exemption from paying the tax for hybrid vehicles for three, four or five years. In some cases these benefits represent a concrete incentive for the diffusion of less polluting means”.

«Today, around 70% of Italian regions provide forms of relief for this type of vehicle», continues Bruno. «Calabria risks remaining among the few realities that have not yet adopted measures capable of encouraging sustainable mobility and accompanying the ecological transition».

Environmental benefits and support for families

The regional councilor underlines how the proposal also has a strong environmental value. «It would be a serious signal in the fight against pollution and in the promotion of virtuous behaviour. If we really want to encourage more environmentally friendly mobility, we must create conditions that incentivize citizens to choose vehicles with a lower environmental impact.”

But there is also another reason that makes the discussion urgent. «Calabrian citizens ask for concrete answers – continues Bruno -. Families continue to bear high costs for travel and car use. A measure of this type would make it possible to lighten, at least in part, the economic burden that weighs on thousands of people.”

The critical issues of the Calabrian road network

In his speech Bruno also recalled the topic of infrastructure and the conditions of the regional road network. «We cannot ignore the fact that the Calabrian road system continues to present enormous critical issues. The Provinces, also following the consequences of the Delrio law, often find themselves in difficulty in the management and maintenance of roads. Citizens use a road network that presents obvious problems on a daily basis and at the same time continue to incur high costs. Also for this reason the Regional Council should take the opportunity to give a concrete signal.”

Towards a new legislative proposal

«As the Tridico President group and the 5 Star Movement – Bruno announces – we will present a bill to introduce exemption from road tax for hybrid vehicles in Calabria too, following the model already adopted by numerous Italian regions. We believe the time has come to fill this gap, encourage more sustainable mobility and offer concrete support to thousands of Calabrian motorists.”
