The Calabria Region begins the consultation phase with the main capital cities to promote the new innovative social housing project which aims to combat the housing hardship of a certain middle segment of the resident population, through the recovery and valorisation of abandoned and/or degraded areas of the existing building heritage in our territory. The vice-president and councilor for Public Works, Urban Planning, Soil Protection and Housing Policies, Filippo Mancuso, promoted the initiative aimed at the redevelopment of already available public and private properties, to use them for social purposes such as support for access to sustainable housing at subsidized rent. The meeting was attended by the administrative representatives of the Municipalities of Catanzaro, Corigliano-Rossano, Cosenza, Crotone, Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia, as the most populous urban centers in our territory, with the specific task of identifying the areas most suited to the need for urban redevelopment and regeneration, to which the recovery project implemented by the Region should be addressed, with the help of private investors, through monitoring shared with the regional administration of the most degraded part of the territory.
The administrators who attended expressed full satisfaction with the initiative implemented by the Regional Council. Specifically, the possibility of allocating funds to the recovery of decommissioned municipal properties, with buildings no longer used or other available and unavailable heritage properties, to be converted into social housing, as well as the redevelopment of the existing building heritage within the historic centres, which increasingly tends to be characterized by the presence of dilapidated buildings, often uninhabited, generating the depopulation of the city heart, which, also, requires a regeneration and rebirth of urban and social decorum, was explored. Private interlocutors will have to be involved as investors in territorial redevelopment operations, taking into account that the interest of this investment aims at a double result, allocating it to those in need, but also enhancing areas of the territory that can be reconverted or in any case aimed at housing development. They will not be ERP accommodation, but social residential housing which will be intended for those in need for a specific medium-long period, at the end of which, whoever has made the initial investment in urban redevelopment will be able to derive a concrete future advantage from the expenses incurred.
With this initiative, Vice President Mancuso concluded by reiterating the Regional Council’s commitment to promoting a concrete strategy of urban regeneration and social inclusion, capable of intertwining recovery of the building heritage, sustainability and direct response to the housing needs of an intermediate segment of Calabrian citizens who find themselves in a situation of housing hardship, and which, unfortunately, includes a large number of the population present in the area.
