The scope and intensity of the conflict between the United States and Iran is expanding, while Tehran declares “all commitments” of the memorandum of understanding with Washington are “suspended”. US forces, for the seventh consecutive night, have intensified the offensive, targeting “surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons depots and maritime capabilities”, the US Central Command said.
The Iranian response in the Gulf
Iran responded with attacks against American allies in the Persian Gulf, which called Tehran’s raids on civilian infrastructure “war crimes.” Air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, and an attack by Iranian forces hit one of Kuwait’s most important oil facilities causing injuries and “serious material damage”, according to Kuwait’s state oil company. The Jordanian army also said it intercepted 10 Iranian ballistic missiles overnight, but reported no significant damage.
According to CBS, several US soldiers have been injured in Iranian attacks on Jordanian bases in recent days. Iranian state media reported damage to bridges and roads in the south of the country following American raids, saying a water desalination plant in Jask was hit. Around 10,000 people are facing water shortages.
Tehran suspends the memorandum
Tehran announced the suspension of all commitments made under the memorandum of understanding reached with the United States a month ago, which had put an end to weeks of fighting between Tehran and Washington and paved the way for detailed negotiations. The announcement comes from Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who accuses Washington of having violated its commitments with recent military actions.
«We were in the negotiation phase. Unfortunately, it was the Americans who carried out these aggressive actions, in violation of their own commitments,” Gharibabadi told Iranian state television. “As a result, we have suspended all of our commitments and are, in fact, no longer implementing them.” The memorandum of understanding, reached a month ago with the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan, had in fact already foundered after the resumption of exchanges of attacks between the two countries.
The stalemate on the Strait of Hormuz remains, navigation is blocked again, while the United States has reintroduced the naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Khamenei: “Trump’s signature on the memorandum is worthless”
Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued a written statement in which he stated that “the Great Satan’s repeated violations of the memorandum of understanding signed between the presidents of Iran and the United States have once again demonstrated to everyone how useless and worthless the signature of the president of the United States is, and that bullying, hegemonic ambitions and barbarism are inseparable elements of the American way and doctrine.”
The front between Israel and Lebanon
Tensions have also increased on the southern front, along the border between Israel and Lebanon. An Israeli drone carried out an airstrike in Nabatieh, Lebanese state news agency National News Agency reported. Israeli warplanes struck a neighborhood in the city of Mansouri, in the coastal district of Tyre, after other aircraft carried out two waves of dawn airstrikes against another area of Mansouri, again according to the Lebanese news agency.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has left for Washington at the invitation of Donald Trump: Aoun will attend a summit at the White House and meet US officials to discuss the fragile ceasefire with Israel. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, meanwhile, has announced that he may call for the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli prime minister goes to New York in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
