Another attack against prison police officers. The episode, reported by the Sappe union, took place at the Palmi prison where a man subjected to the special prison regime, known to the prison administration for his aggressive nature and numerous disciplinary precedents connected to violent conduct repeated over time, attacked the department commander and a penitentiary police non-commissioned officer. Due to a blow to the face, the non-commissioned officer suffered such injuries as to require emergency transfer to the hospital in Reggio Calabria, where he underwent appropriate treatment. «It is necessary – say Giovanni Battista Durante, deputy general secretary of Sappe and Francesco Ciccone, national secretary – to proceed as soon as possible with the classification of institutions into three typologies at a regional level: maximum and medium security, attenuated custody. In maximum security institutions it is necessary to identify departments in which to allocate all those who attack the staff. It’s time to change course, before the system finally collapses.”
