The shacks left standing in Messina, before the special law, were around 2200. Now there are just over 1400. In fact, over 700 have been demolished. If we take into account that five years have passed since the commissioner structure became operational – first led by the prefect Cosima Di Stani, then by the Sicilian governor Renato Schifani -, and if the times and procedures as followed so far were to be implemented, we would have the following scenario: by By 2031 the number of shacks would be halved, by 2036 there should be no more. It is therefore a ten-year journey, or, in the best of forecasts, a journey destined to certainly last between 7 and 8 years.
This is why the issue of financial resources becomes a priority. Today, when only 5 million euros remain in the special accounting coffers, it can be said that the commissioner’s office has worked well, using all available funds and therefore completing the commitment of the original financial allocation, that of 100 million euros, allocated thanks to the “Carfagna law”. But the recovery cannot stop here. Mayor Basile has calculated that approximately 370 million euros will be needed to demolish the over 1,400 shacks in the municipal area. Probably even 200-250 will be enough, but in any case these are substantial resources.
