The seismic sequence in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Alicudi, has not stopped for over ten days. Even in recent days the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has continued to locate numerous tremors in the area. The strongest, of local magnitude 3.6, was recorded yesterday at 6.34 am, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The shocks of the last few days
On Friday 30 October, in addition to the 3.6 magnitude event, a 3.0 earthquake was recorded at 7.15 am and a 2.7 earthquake at 4.36 am. On Thursday the strongest was magnitude 3.1, at 9.41, while today the strongest, until the afternoon, was magnitude 2.9 at 8.08. The hypocenters are mostly found around 10 kilometers deep.
The 5.5 magnitude earthquake on October 23rd
The sequence began on the night of October 20th in a stretch of sea about 30 kilometers north-west of Alicudi, in the Aeolian archipelago. The strongest event occurred on October 23 at 12.19 pm, with moment magnitude 5.5 (local magnitude 5.0) and hypocenter at about 9 kilometers depth. The shock was felt distinctly in the Aeolian Islands and along the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, between Palermo and Messina, and more lightly in the rest of the island and in Calabria. At 6pm the following day, 24 October, the INGV had already recorded 154 events starting from that quake.
