One arrest, four people reported on the loose, weapons withdrawn as a precaution and around 50 kilos of food products seized. This is the outcome of the latest extraordinary territorial control operation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Company of Vibo Valentia between the capital, Mileto, Francica and the Costa degli Dei.

The activity, aimed at preventing and repressing crimes related to drugs, illicit possession of weapons, violations of road safety and irregularities in the catering sector, allowed a total of 130 people to be identified and 73 vehicles to be checked, leading to the imposition of administrative sanctions for a total of 2,680 euros.

From the sky to the street: the details of the operation

The services, concentrated in particular between Vibo Valentia and Mileto, saw the precious air support of the 8th Carabinieri Helicopter Unit.

The restrictive measure: in Mileto, the soldiers of the local station carried out an order from the Judicial Authority against a local man, subjected to a security measure of detention in a workhouse following repeated violations of the obligations of Special Surveillance with mandatory residence. In the same town, another man was reported for escape: he was under house arrest but was caught without authorization in his mother’s home.

Drugs in the capital: During a house search in Vibo Valentia Marina, the Carabinieri found three wrappers containing cocaine. The substance was seized, while the owner was reported at large.

Drunk driving: The Radiomobile Section caught two motorists driving with blood alcohol levels well above the limits permitted by law (1.28 and 1.75 g/l respectively, ascertained by breathalyzer), triggering the related reports.

Unreported weapons and controls in restaurants

In Francica, attention has shifted to the legislation regulating the possession of weapons. The Carabinieri discovered that a resident was keeping a 16 gauge shotgun, which belonged to his deceased father-in-law, without ever reporting it. Consequently, the military proceeded with the precautionary withdrawal not only of the undeclared weapon, but also of all the remaining regularly held arsenal: a 12 gauge over-and-under shotgun, a 7.65 caliber pistol and 37 rounds of ammunition.

Finally, the checks extended to the Costa degli Dei, where the Carabinieri of the Pizzo station – together with colleagues from the Labor Inspectorate Unit – inspected a catering establishment. An illegal worker was discovered inside, with no contractual protection.
The serious work irregularities led to fines of around 6,500 euros and the immediate suspension of the business activity. The joint intervention also brought to light serious hygienic-sanitary deficiencies, which led to the violation being contested and the administrative seizure of approximately 50 kilos of food products deemed unsuitable for conservation and consumption.
