Important milestone reached to the Papardo hospital in Messina, where a Sacral neuromodulation intervention, an innovative technique for the treatment of dysfunctions of the low urinary and intestinal tract. The operation was conducted by the team of the Complex Urology operating unit, directed by Francesco Mastroeni.

To perform the intervention materially was Pietro Pappawith the assistance of the nurse Patrizia Granata and the technical support of the Medtronic company. During the procedure, a neuromodist was implanted, a small device similar to a “pace-maker” which, through electrical impulses sent to sacral nerves, helps to regulate communication between brain and urinary and intestinal system.

Sacral neuromodulation takes place in two phases: a first test phase, lasting two to four weeks, serves to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. In the event of a positive outcome, we proceed with the definitive system of the device, always under local anesthesia.

This method, minimally invasive and reversible, has proven to be particularly effective in cases where conventional therapies have not given results. It is suitable for patients with urinary and fecal incontinence, urinary retention, hyperactive bladder, chronic constipation and persistent pelvic pain. Among the main advantages: a high percentage of success, the reduction of the use of drugs and a clear improvement in the quality of life, without alterations in sensitivity or sexual function.
