Daniil Medvedev qualified for the semi-finals of the Australian Open by beating Hubert Hurkacz in five sets 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in just under four hours. Medvedev, world number 3, already a double finalist in Melbourne (2021 and 2022), will play his third semi-final on Friday, the eighth in total in a Slam. The 27-year-old Russian awaits number 2 Carlos Alcaraz or number 6 Alexander Zverev who have yet to face each other. The other semi-final of the men’s draw will pit world number 1 Novak Djokovic against world number 4 Jannik Sinner.
Against Hurkacz, Medvedev had a break advantage in the fourth set (4-2), before the Pole returned to delay the end of the match. Medvedev explained that he “lost concentration in the fourth set”.
