There would also be an Italian mountaineer among the seven victims confirmed by the Nepalese authorities following an avalanche that swept away the base camp of Yalung Ri, a 5,630 meter mountain in the Rolwaling valley, in the Dolakha district. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Gyan Kumar Mahato of the Dolakha District Police Office, the victims include three US citizens, one Canadian, one Italian and two Nepalese. Four people were injured and four were missing. The deputy superintendent, quoted by The Kathmandu Post website, said that the avalanche occurred while the team of Nepalese and foreign climbers, together with local guides, were at the Yalung Ri base camp preparing to climb the highest peak, the 6,332 meter high Dolma Khang. Rescue operations are underway, but the authorities said they were interrupted in the evening due to darkness.
