The European Union is willing to evaluate new aid to the regions of Southern Italy hit by Cyclone Harry last January. This is supported in an official document by the vice-president of the Commission, Raffaele Fitto, in the response provided to a question presented by some European parliamentarians – among whom the Calabrians Pasquale Tridico and Mimmo Lucano stand out – who asked for clarification on the initiatives promoted by Brussels to protect the most exposed territories.
Fitto assures that the Commission is carrying out “an accurate evaluation” of the request made by Italy for assistance from the EU Solidarity Fund. The only representative of our country in the community executive then recalls that «the programs of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily currently include 352 million euros for the prevention and management of risks caused by natural disasters. As of 31 December 2025, 196 million had been allocated to selected operations, while 156 million are still available to support new interventions. The Commission is available to discuss with the regional authorities how this financial allocation could be used to deal with the consequences of events of this type.”
